Brief description of learners, context/setting:
This lesson plan will be taking place in a confirmation class for high schoolers in a congregation. There will be roughly 10-15 of them, aged 15-16, and have grown up in this Reform synagogue. The confirmation class will have introduced the students to ways of making Judaism relevant to people growing up and out of a certain childhood naïveté. The class is a biweekly 2 hour class taught by clergy and educators at the temple. The class will have introduced them to rabbinic literature and explored ways of making its values system relevant, for example, and explored the Jewish take on modern problems. The learners are kids who have shown commitment to studying Judaism by continuing involvement in synagogue life post-b’nai mitzvah, but they are also wary of organized religion, having grown up in a very secularizing culture. They are smart and discerning and want real, thick education.
Rationale
Disillusionment with the Bible is very common for people who do not grow up in a fundamentalist culture. It can be very easy to dismiss the Bible as a falsehood or a pseudo-history when people realize that it cannot possibly be written by God because of its imperfect nature and hard to believe history. It is important to ensure that serious studiers of Torah do not simply dismiss it because they realize that it contains non-factual history or because they realize that it was written by hand. Therefore, it is important to show our students that Reform Judaism shares the questions that they have about the text and encourages the academic study of Torah. These kinds of questions are very important for young adults in this developmental stage, because they have moved past the time of knowledge gathering and simple moral dilemmas. They have moved into a place in their education where they are questioning and trying to solidify their identities, so it is essential to show that just as they are questioning the validity and relevancy of the Torah, so do we share in those questions.
It is important to expose these young learners to this kind of academic study of Torah, because it is essential to give them a certain amount of tools of understanding the Torah when they cannot accept it as fact. When they are exposed to the documentary hypothesis, they will see that there is a lot more at stake in the Torah than factuality and historicity. By deconstructing the identities of the authors, introducing them to the process of redaction, and helping them see some of the political contexts of the authors, the students will see the process of how the Torah came together and see it as a document that not only tells a history but is itself a political document
Goals:
1. Get students to consider the problematics of seeing the Bible text as written by God
2. Present the Bible as a work of redaction by multiple authors
3. Illustrate how this redaction happened
4. Present the four authors of the Bible
5. Get students to do basic (when presented with texts with obvious markers of context or political bias) classification of Torah texts by author.
Objectives:
1. When presented with oddities in Torah texts (redundancies, multiple authors jumbled together, same stories in different places), students will be able to describe what is odd about them or compare/contrast two texts with similar content.
2. When presented with oddities/redundancies/etc., they will begin to hypothesize why these oddities exist in terms of writing process.
3. Students will know the four layers of authorship in the Torah (JEDP) and some context behind these writers (date, location, political motives)
4. Students will apply their knowledge of JEPD layers of authorship to 3-4 texts and identify which of the four layers of authorship may be present
5. Students will perform a guided demonstration of redaction by piecing together two stories on the same topic sequentially and intermittently to imitate what the Biblical Redactor did.
Set Induction:
0-15 minutes
Have the students read out loud together Exodus Chapter 14 with these guiding questions:
-What happened to the sea? Did it part or did a strong wind draw it back?
-How did the Egyptians die? Did they drown or did God throw them into the sea?
-Was God present or was the angel of God present?
Discuss these questions then ask them: does the text as it is make sense and create a cohesive picture for you? Or is it jumbled?
After they discuss the difficulties of understanding this text, present to them the text divided into its two sources: J/E and P. Ask them if the two stories separated make more sense.
-Key question: What might this mean about how our Torah came together?
Introduction to Redaction:
15-25 Minutes
Divide the class into two groups. Assign each group to write out the story of the Three Little Pigs in one paragraph. In order to make sure that each group produces a different text, tell one group to tell the story from the point of view from the pigs, and tell the other group to write from the point of view from the wolf.
25-30 Minutes
Have each group write their story, word for word on the board, and have each side share their story with each other
30-45 Minutes
Have each group engage in a “Redaction” of the texts, that is to say, have them combine the two texts into one work. Assign one group to combine the two stories sequentially (tell one story then the next), making sure to transition between the two and making slight alterations to make them seem like two stories happening back to back. Have the second group incorporate both stories into one story, preserving the integrity of the wording of both stories as best as possible.
45-50 Minutes
Have each side present their “Redacted” work.
*50-60 Minutes
Divide the class into two different groups. Tell them that they are each receiving a Biblical text that has two sources in it. Have them try to parse out how those two sources came together into that one text. Have one group read Genesis 1-2. (This is a sequential text, one story from one source then another story from another source)
Have the second group read Genesis 37:12-30 (This seems to have multiple stories jumbled together into one text, as it is unclear who actually sold Joseph into slavery)
*60-65 Minutes
Have each group present their findings to the other.
Introduction to the Authors:
65-80 Minutes Divide the class into three different groups. Tell groups to go to the library and do Wikipedia searches of their Biblical author (Jawist and Elohist, Priestly, and Deuteronomist). Have the group prepare a short presentation about the author for the rest of the class. One group will be J/E, one D, and one P.
80-90 Minutes Groups will present to each other on their authors. Presentations should include information about when the authors wrote, where they wrote, and under what political influences were they writing. Divide white board in three, after each presentation write the key markers of each author to ensure students got all the information they need to do the assessment in the next activity. (D produced during Josiah’s reign 7th century BCE, centralized Judaism around the Temple in Jerusalem; P written post-Exile in 5th century BCE, preoccupied with preserving the rituals of the first temple, most of its content is law and ritual; J/E written 8th century BCE, covers most of the narrative in Genesis and Exodus, preoccupied with holy sites not in Jerusalem)
*90-105 Minutes Hang four sheets with Biblical quotations around the room. Have the students go around the room and try to figure out which author they believe wrote the selection posted. After 10 minutes, gather the group together and have a discussion about what they determined. One quotation will be Deuteronomy 16 (identifiable as D because of its focus on sacrificing in Jerusalem), Leviticus 9 (Identifiable as P from its focus on ritual), and Genesis 28:10-22 (identifiable as J/E because of its focus on an altar of God not in Jerusalem).

*105-110 Recap of what we have learned: Bible as a work of redaction, oddities and redundancies in the Bible can be explained by the Documentary Hypothesis, and the different authors are identifiable by their focuses and political identities
110-120 Discussion of what this means.
-How does this change your opinion of what the Torah is and who wrote it?
-Should it change how Judaism feels about the Torah? Why yes, and why no?
-Teacher will share his own opinion about this to show that he struggles with the same questions
Plans for Differentiating Instruction:
The learning plan will incorporate many different intelligences. While some will be frontal, the lesson will incorporate group work, writing, presentation, dramatization, and group discussion.

Exodus 14
Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon. 3 Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ 4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” So the Israelites did this.
5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!” 6 So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. 7 He took six hundred of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. 8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly. 9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen[a] and troops—pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”
13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 TheLord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”
19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them,20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.
23 The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. 24 During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. 25 He jammed[b] the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.”
26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward[c] it, and the Lord swept them into the sea. 28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.
29 But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. 30 That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

Genesis 1 and 2: How do these Creations Fit Together?
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hoveringover the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good,and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it.And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry groundappear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

Adam and Eve
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LordGod made the earth and the heavens.
5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LordGod had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams[b]came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed a man[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life,and the man became a living being.
8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[d] and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[e] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam[f] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
Based on the activity that they just did, what is happening here? If there are two authors and two stories, how are they put together?
Jacob Sold to Slavery: Who Actually Did It?
Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”
“Very well,” he replied.
14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.
When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”
17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”
So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.
19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”
21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelitescoming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.
26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.
28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cisternand sold him for twenty shekels[b] of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.
29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”
31 Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32 They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”
33 He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”
34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.
36 Meanwhile, the Midianites[c] sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.
Does this text make sense? Who sold Joseph into slavery? Based on the activity that we just did, might there be more than one author here?
Deuteronomy 16
Observe the month of Aviv and celebrate the Passover of the Lord your God, because in the month of Aviv he brought you out of Egypt by night. 2 Sacrifice as the Passover to theLord your God an animal from your flock or herd at the place the Lord will choose as a dwelling for his Name. 3 Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste—so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt. 4 Let no yeast be found in your possession in all your land for seven days. Do not let any of the meat you sacrifice on the evening of the first day remain until morning.
5 You must not sacrifice the Passover in any town the Lord your God gives you 6 except in the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name. There you must sacrifice the Passover in the evening, when the sun goes down, on the anniversary[a] of your departure from Egypt.7 Roast it and eat it at the place the Lord your God will choose. Then in the morning return to your tents. 8 For six days eat unleavened bread and on the seventh day hold an assembly to the Lord your God and do no work.

On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. 2 He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf for your sin offering[a] and a ram for your burnt offering, both without defect, and present them before the Lord. 3 Then say to the Israelites: ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb—both a year old and without defect—for a burnt offering, 4 and an ox[b] and a ram for a fellowship offering to sacrifice before the Lord, together with a grain offering mixed with olive oil. For today the Lord will appear to you.’”
5 They took the things Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the entire assembly came near and stood before the Lord. 6 Then Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord may appear to you.”
7 Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people; sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.”
8 So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. 9 His sons brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar. 10 On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the Lordcommanded Moses; 11 the flesh and the hide he burned up outside the camp.
12 Then he slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 13 They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14 He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.
15 Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people. He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.
16 He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way. 17 He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel,[e] though the city used to be called Luz.
20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safelyto my father’s household, then the Lord[f] will be my God 22 and[g] this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
